The expression of this Khmer Buddha is that of deep inner peace. It is called ‘the Smile of Angkor’ and is thought to resemble Jayavarman VII, the king of the Khmer Empire who ruled for 37 years.

Jayavarman VII, inspired by his wife Jayarājadevī and by her sister Indradevīwas, was especially committed to Mahāyāna Buddhism, evidenced by the extent of his support of the creation of Buddhist monuments. In his time, women and men held equal respect and power. He built the impressive city of Angkor Thom, located in present-day Cambodia. At its center stands one of his most massive achievements, the temple now called the Bayon: a multi-faceted, multi-towered temple that mixes Buddhist and Hindu iconography. Jayavarman VII dedicated himself to alleviating the suffering of his people, and built many hospitals and safe resting places during his reign.
