The elephant is a very auspicious creature in both the Buddhist and yogic traditions. Buddha's mother dreamed of a white elephant on the night he was conceived. The elephant is a symbol of mental strength. At the beginning of one's practice, the uncontrolled mind is likened to a wild elephant who is capable of great destruction. After taming the mind through the practice of dharma, the tamed mind is symbolized by a white elephant, strong and powerful, which can be directed wherever one wishes and can destroy all obstacles on the way.
