Indigo and white, the countryside colors of old Japan are the inspiration for this unique collection of textiles based on traditional Japanese kasuri. The coordinating patterns call to mind an almost forgotten way of life rooted in deep reverence for the natural world and the appreciation of ordinary things.
The Zippered Ikat Zafu (pron. zah'-foo) is designed for meditation or floor sitting. It is made of our exclusive, handwoven 100% cotton ikat fabric. We stuff the Ikat Zafu with approximately 4 1/2 lbs. of buckwheat hulls enclosed in a zippered muslin shell making it easy to add or remove buckwheat.
The buckwheat filled Zafu Cushion is our bestselling product. While providing all the support of a traditional kapok-filled zafu, the Buckwheat Hull Zafu conforms more readily to each individual's shape and is somewhat softer. It feels like sitting on sand at the beach — the hulls move to where you want them allowing you to sit in a comfortable upright posture.

Our Japanese Ikat Fabrics
Ikat is handwoven cloth that has been resist dyed prior to the weaving process. In Japan, this technique is known as kasuri. Before dyeing, sections of yarn are tightly bound in predetermined lengths. The dye does not penetrate these protected areas when the thread is dipped into the dye bath. The binding is then carefully removed leaving yarn that is partly white and partly colored. The threads are then used as the warp or weft so a pattern appears as the cloth is woven. The slight misalignment of threads gives the pattern on the kasuri cloth its characteristic 'fuzzy' outline. The dyer must possess great skill to bind the threads in just the right place so the pattern emerges as planned. DharmaCrafts Ikat fabrics are dyed and woven by hand in India. Cutting, stitching, and assembly take place on-site at our location in Massachusetts.
Why Buy Our Meditation Cushions?
Your meditation cushion is so much more than an ergonomic tool. Over time, it becomes your beloved companion! That's why making quality cushions is so important to DharmaCrafts. It is our honor to make the cushion that will accompany you on your spiritual journey.
Handcrafted in Our Own ShopSince the beginning, DharmaCrafts cushions have been handcrafted in our own shop. DharmaCrafts' founder, Dyan Eagles, originally stuffed each zafu herself outside on the porch at the Cambridge Zen Center, even during the cold New England winter. Now your DharmaCrafts cushion is made by a small, dedicated staff of trained craftspeople who pay close attention to fine detail.

Why Choose DharmaCrafts?
In 1979, Dyan Eagles, a young student of Zen Master Seung Sahn at the Cambridge Zen Center in Massachusetts, founded DharmaCrafts to fulfill her vision of right livelihood. Many years later DharmaCrafts is still fulfilling its mission of providing the dharma community with teaching and products to support spiritual practice and inspire everyday life.
So much has changed since the early years when Dyan stuffed each zafu cushion by herself. DharmaCrafts cushions are now made in our own workshop in Fall River, Massachusetts, by a small, dedicated staff of trained craftspeople who pay close attention to details. You can still depend on our workmanship for a consistently excellent and distinctive meditation cushion, resulting in the perfect place to rest your body and mind.
This informative and fun video shows you why choosing a handcrafted DharmaCrafts meditation cushion is an investment that will last a lifetime. You will also learn the benefits of using a zafu (round cushion) and zabuton (flat mat) set as opposed to just sitting on the floor or on a pillow.
Meditation Cushions - FAQs
All round buckwheat filled zafu cushions, flat zabuton mats, roll up and go yoga mats, and support cushions come with a zippered cover that may be removed for washing.
Kapok zafus and bench cushions: spot clean only.
Remove zippered cover. Turn cover inside out and machine wash separately in COLD water, gentle cycle, using liquid detergent. Be sure NOT to overload washing machine. Allow enough space for the water to circulate evenly among the covers, ensuring that they will look as good after washing as they did when they were new!
— Buckwheat zafu: Inner shell is also washable. Remove outer cover, unzip shell & pour out buckwheat before washing. Buckwheat hulls should NOT get wet.
— Zabuton mat: Cut the decorative stitch/tack on surface of cushion before removing cover.
— Two-toned cushions: Dry cleaning is recommended to prevent the risk of bleeding.
Hang to dry. Do NOT use dryer. Cotton will shrink in dryer. Iron on cotton setting.
Buckwheat hull and cotton batting filling should NOT get wet.
As with all fine fabrics, avoid direct sunlight. All fabrics will fade over time.
