Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, also known as Chenrezig, Guanyin, or Kuanyin in Tibet, China, and Japan respectively, is a Buddhist deity known for his deep sense of mercy and compassion toward all living beings. He is synonymous with his female counterpart, the goddess Tara, who was born of his tears he shed upon witnessing the suffering of mortal beings. His name translates roughly to "lord who looks down with compassion".
