Hotei (Chinese: 布袋), also known as Budai, is often referred to as "the fat buddha" or "the laughing Buddha" and commonly confused with The Buddha- Gautama Buddha. Hotei was actually a Chinese Buddhist monk that lived in the 10th century CE who was known for his exceptionally jolly personality and nomadic lifestyle. Budai would travel from village to village, cheerfully greeting adoring children with his iconic cloth sack slung over his shoulder. Depictions of Hotei are a symbol of happiness, abundance, wealth, and contentment.
