The plump, smiling depiction of Buddha, like seen in this Tiny Happy Buddha Pendant Necklace in Silver, is commonly mistaken to be the Buddha- Siddhartha Gautama. But this style of the "fat Buddha" is actually an image of Budai: a Chinese monk from around the 10th century.
In his life, Budai (Chinese: 布袋) was known to be a jolly and nomadic man who achieved great joy in his life despite owning few possessions and being essentially homeless. It is said that he carried everything he owned in a cloth sack and that nothing made him happier than entertaining the adoring children he met on his journeys.
In present day, "laughing Buddha" is revered as a symbol of good fortune and happiness across Asia and the West.
Pendant measurements: 1cm x 1cm
